Meadow grass along the trail to Day Mountain

When you are ready to return, walk back down to the saddle and junction with Trail 160 and turn right. This trail climbs gently, then very steeply, up to the summit of 5,282-foot Mount Kit Carson, crossing a junction with an old pack trail and Trail 160 as it returns from the summit. Continue climbing around a couple of switchbacks to the summit viewpoint. In the event you didn’t picnic on Day Mountain, Lucifer himself will drag you screaming to hell if you don’t feast here.

Finally, retrace your route to the old pack trail and turn right on Trail 160, traversing around Kit Carson and dropping steeply down to the first 130/160 fork above Saddle Junction, 4.8 miles from the trailhead. Stay right and return to Saddle Junction, retracing your steps back to the trailhead.

Going Farther

For a marathon adventure, stay on Trail 130 as it descends from Day Mountain and crosses the Upper Mount Kit Carson Loop Road, where it becomes the Round the Mountain Trail. Completing the entire circumnavigation of Mount Spokane and returning to Bald Knob would be a hike of at least 13 miles and more vertical than you can count. ■
